Internet

Turns out that I need to use Internet explorer to install PIWIK! Chrome has an issue with it! I couldn’t get past the database setup portion of the install and I thought it was piwik but in reality it was just Chrome that did not work correctly in saving the cookies or something.

Very weird.

KeepNote has been my favorite note program for a while… I think I’ve proven this over time, but I have a new way to tell people of how to use KeepNote!

I’ve mentioned various ways to use KeepNote before such as: as a journal, school notes, general reference(GTD), a powerful place to store ideas, and any other information you might have.

I have not however made this connection for you yet… put it in Dropbox. Or any other cloud sync application and then… wait for it: PUT KeepNote in there with a ‘portable.txt’ file in its root.

This is awesome. Not only will you have your notes of whatever, but now you have this ultra easily editable notebook with KeepNote right there! Putting a ‘portable.txt’ file in the root of keepnote/ will tell KeepNote that it should act in portable mode which saves the settings and other data within the KeepNote directory. This is a Windows specific thing of course because in Linux/Mac OS X applications already generally work like this.

So go ahead! Switch to KeepNote, get a Dropbox or Wuala account, and move your notes to a more private, secure, portable, and easy format! No motive here except helping people find things out and not asking them to click ads on my website! ;)

I do not have an image for my website to show you this time. This is because I lost all of the code for this website a long time ago. It was eventually so horrible that I deleted it. I couldn’t even load the page without errors so I would have had trouble getting a screenshot anyways.

I’ll use this as a chance to explain the pitfalls I encountered making this website and how you should avoid them in your website but also as a history lesson of my old website.

It was created using PHP which I had just learned from Tizag.com. At that time I just learned PHP only and no understanding of how to organize my code. A horrible mistake on my part and which my dad warned me on and I promptly ignored as well. Reason being that I created a website the worked! For the first time ever I made a server-side powered website that actually did something! It was, to say the least, VERY liberating to finally have gotten to the point of making a website. Not to say it looked that great, did much, or even did it well, but it did something.

I can’t remember for sure but I think I could update the pages using a web interface. I could also update certain things that showed up on the website. I do however know I did create a section for people to upload ‘Current Events’. The deal was that our teacher never actually checked the current events. It was just important that we made sure to not all turn in the same one or turn in the same ones every week. However all I made was a place for people to contribute to the place by adding new Current Events. The idea behind that being that if we all created one current event we could alternate between each other and build a collection to use repeatedly. It did not but it was a good try I thought.

However one day during math class, we were using the computers and disaster struck. I loaded my website out of curiosity and clicked a link. All of a sudden my website when in to a crazy error and nothing was working. The whole website crashed and it looked like my login.php was the source of the error. The problem also with this was that login.php was required for the whole website and powered a good deal of the functionality. Most of the website was created with login.php providing the authentication. So you can imagine I just did something to the website that causes this issue to occur. Apparently not because 3 hours later for me and another hour or two with my dad solved no bug…

My website was dead… the cause? SPAGHETTI CODE.

Login.php was a horrible piece of code. I couldn’t figure it out my self either I just knew it worked and that if I kept using the session variables and cookies it set that I could get what I needed and provide the features I wanted. However it was over… the website had died.

Thats when I created my temporary flash website of Chris Portela V7.net so I could create Chris Portela V7.net

I’ve used KeepNote in many ways and I’ve heard a few other ways other people have used it as well from the Google Group for KeepNote, the primary way for communicating with Matt and suggesting features and keeping up to date on everything, so I know quite a bit about how to use KeepNote. I’m no expert, however I’ve learned how I think it’s best to use KeepNote.

KeepNote is a simple, easy to use, opensource, free (as in beer), OneNote alternative Continue reading »

I just started using Google Music and I already love it. I love Songbird too but this Google Music thing is like magic. I tell it I want music and it puts it all in the cloud. Then on my computer, on my phone, on anything/anywhere I can listen to my music and my collections of music. Any new music I download can be automatically uploaded and added to my library of songs which now I can stream to my phone or even download for offline listening! This makes my phone such a better device for music listening now.

GET an invite… please and just hope you get it.

This is my simple thank you to Google by putting some good word out there about it. Later I’ll make some deeper reivew/long post about Google Music.

I HAVE NYANED FOR 568426081.5 SECONDS! http://t.co/cUOwcZg via @nyannyancat

Normally I try to stay normal and write real English, even on the internet, but I really couldn’t help but give this post this title since I totally destroyed nyan.cat which is a website that lets you test your mettle in terms of how long you take listening to that stupid cat meow in Japanese…
My solution to this was to hack the simple JavaScript code behind it which was pretty easy after like maybe 10 minutes of looking though the code for where it saved the the date were it started. Then I ran in the issue which is kinda weird. When I tried to edit the cookie in chrome directly I thought it would be intelligent and save it as a date again. Instead it saved it a string and then caused the poor nyan cat to say I was doing it for Nan seconds. It was long till I figured it there was no other way than using the JS console and just changing the value directly so I made it go back in time… all the way back to 1993.

So in summary… I made a website which probably hasn’t been around for a year at most (I’m not sure, I just found out about it so I’m just guessing here) say I’ve been watching a stupid pop-tart cat (STUPID?! OMG NOOOOSSS!) since about 3 months before I was even born… Sounds logical enough for me.

School is about to end and summer is almost here and so now is that time of the year where I can comfortably begin to accept and plan projects for over the summer.

Don’t let the technical lingo scare you; It’s just to show the skills I have available, but I do not need to speak in this other language if you don’t want me to.

I am currently available for web development projects using PHP with CakePHP, MySQL, JavaScript, HTML5, XHTML, or CSS on both Windows and Linux Hosting. I am also available for setting up websites with WordPress blogs, PHPbb forums, or even CMS systems securely so you can use what works for you.

However, what makes me different is that I can make complicated and custom websites that are created with your needs in mind. It is as specialized or generalized as you need with whatever features you might want. All for a reasonable price.

If you have a project please contact me via the contact form on my website and we can begin the process of estimating a price and feature set for your website where we can see the costs and time requirements to complete your project.

Many people ask me to help them with a huge number of things related to computers. Sometimes however it would make my job, their life, and the result of my job much better if they could ask their question better or better yet found the solution by their lonesome with trusty Google at their side. But how could anyone expect to learn these two amazing skills?

Simple, the internet has all the answers.

Firstly go to http://www.googleguide.com/ to read the guide for any level of googler so you can improve your googling to prevent the need for any questions in the first place. I think anyone who knows anything about computers, especially self taught hackers, will tell you that google taught them much of what they know and can do. I seriously have taught my self most of the valuable life skills I know in addition to most of the world knowledge I know. That is not even touching the volumes of technological knowledge I’ve gained from the internet and from googling things I was interested about. Look at this website and maybe you’ll finally be enlightened to stop asking me to search for you :P

Next up is for the times when you’ve searched but you just don’t get it; when you need to ask a question. Oh I know I’ve been guilty too many times of not asking questions this way and to all those helpful people to tried to figure out my problems anyways, thank you. But in reality the way to ask smart questions is explained at Eric Raymond’s website , the creator of the HTML Hell and how to be a hacker pages, http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html. You see, this is a very well thought out essay, which I admit is quite long, that explains all you need to know about asking questions. I even gave you the skills for one of it’s tips to google first! But I am so helpful I anticipated your possible struggles and provided a solution for you due to my experience with helping people with computers.

I honestly hope I helped someone figure out how to learn something on the internet. The goal of the internet’s protectors is to spread information and knowledge. I really hope I just help progress that ideal for someone with this article on my obscure blog. :)

I have gotten my old back up of my previous websites back! I thought I had lost it forever but indeed DailyRazor hosting has gotten it back for me! Now my previous work will show the years I’ve put in to learning this craft (And probably how slowly it’s taken me to get to where I am today). I have websites all the way from 2007 when I first began to web develop. From old teacher websites to failed “company” websites, it’s all here! I even have my horribly horrible 5.net website! All these websites were back when flash was cool and I have flash ALL over them.

I’m going to boot up these websites, especially the ASP.NET ones and take screenshots. Hopefully I can upload them so you can view them for your pleasures on my website.

WOW I can’t explain how happy I am right now.

I’ve discovered the WONDERFUL CakePHP framework for php. It has taught me so far how to make an entire web app in about 5 minutes with all the bells and whistles. I’m currently trying to become skilled in using CakePHP because I see great potential for it’s use in my many Web projects of personal, commercial, and freely donated types. My biggest problem of before was that I couldn’t make that back-end, a pain in the ass, correctly, easily, or quickly enough to make my customers happy. Infact this very WordPress blog is here instead of my own custom made website just because it took me so long. I simply do not have the time to learn all that stuff nor completely do all the things I know but I have the skills to make websites anyway.

I’ve been basically sitting my ass with these skills for about two years now. It’s time I got back up and did something with them. In the next month maybe I’ll post tutorials, information, and other stuff about CakePHP to help people out there learn about this powerful frame work.

For sure you’ll be seeing a lot of new Websites and more coming from me in the next couple months. Once I reach that point I’ll be ready for accepting business again.

Better watch out; I’m coming back ;)
