KeepNote : Note taking and organization

Remember how I made a post about Keep Note a while ago and talked about how great it was and how it simply solves all my issues dealing with switching to Linux entirely? Well on that level it was slightly exaggerated and I can’t switch over just yet to Linux and I’m learning all I need to learn now so I can make that switch much easier on myself and the people I need to be able to get my homework done quickly and in a way that’s compatible reliably. BUT, I was able to make the first switch I need to make in accomplishing that goal which is making the long and somewhat irritating switch from OneNote to KeepNote. I wish I knew an easier way to make that switch but for right now I did it the hard way by copying and reformatting all my notes in to KeepNote. The worst part was having to reformat all my unnumbered lists in KeepNote because it’s apparently completely incompatible with OneNote. BUT I did switch to KeepNote. I’ve now run keep note for a couple weeks and it’s worked very well. I got used to it quickly and began to naturally avoid things that cause bugs in the program and crash it. Of course sometimes it does still do that but it’s almost impossible for it to lose the data still because it saves so quickly and to separate small files which are easy to save quickly. Matt , the main programmer of KeepNote, is releasing new versions every so often and it gets better and better every time he does. I love KeepNote now and as soon as I can I’m switching over to Linux to continue my hacking and open source adventures.

I really like OneNote but its Windows only. That’s just not going to work for me. But it REALLY REALLY is an amazing piece of software. OneNote is the only reason I still install word instead of other programs. Specifically why I NEED Office 2010 instead of just installing maybe 2007. REALLY that’s the only real reason for installing office for me. All my other stuff I could do in Google Docs or in Open Office. So here comes to my overall problem with this, I’ve been trying to switch to Linux for a while now. I know me and many people out there would be happy as can be in Linux if we could just get OneNote to work there, and that’s also considering that I assume you think like I do in that I don’t think a downgrade would be good from 2010 because the 2010 version really is the best version.  I know OneNote 2007 can be installed with Wine/Crossover in Linux but its not with the new ribbon bar or some of the other features that I find very important to me. Well my solution to all these issues is Keep Note. I’ve only used a little bit, and I haven’t figured out how exactly I am going to transfer my notebooks from OneNote to Keep Note but I love it. I’ll tell you why…

First of all it’s open source which should be a major plus to any potential Linux user. It’s cross platform and written in python. It saves its files as separate files/folder structure on the computer. The files it’s saves are generally HTML files, but you can add any file to the notes in Keep Note. It keeps everything in an index as a node which all can have sub nodes. Basically I can make a note and then attach a file, lets  say a video, and then I could attach more notes or files to that video. And all of you guys out there that need tagging, keep note’s tagging isn’t exactly SUPER powerful, but you can change the icon on any node so you can makeshift a system with that. Personally I never really too advantage of tagging so I don’t really need something that powerful as OneNote. Finally, Keep note is just simple, small, and quick. It’s a great/powerful alternative to OneNote and once I figure out how I am going to get all my notes from OneNote to Keep Note , and actually do it, I’ll be over into the Linux world for the foreseeable future

I’ve begun working on a new .NET windows quick launching application to give Keepnote the same functionality as OneNote that has it’s own special taskbar icon that allows very easy note creation.

Look at these screenshots

I’m not sure where I want to upload the code to or how since it appears wordpress doesn’t like uploading random files (figures…) but I’ll figure something out eventually.
