PBHS JROTC wiki was a project I took on while I was in JROTC. A very heavy contributor was my assistant Smith who eventually became the S6 when I left the class. During that time however I thought of bringing my ideas of how the open source world usually deals with something no body knows everything about but many people know a lot about differently: use a wiki to help centralize that information. In doing so I thought we had solved many current and future issues, but as with many technologies that ‘solve everything’ they create new problems to solve.

For one we discovered the beauty of spam. OH spam, and how we then proceeded to lock every page because spam kept creeping on to the server and changing it. Once we fixed that we were basically left to edit the wiki our selves. Then it was the wiki language which was weird as well to anything we had already known. But the issue wasn’t for us but for others who wanted to edit would have to edit in wiki format! This isn’t arch linux, people were amazed when I setup Dropbox and Google Docs, so I began to understand that it wasn’t going to be excatly like arch linux’s wiki by any stretch of the imagination.

Our goal was to create an online cadet hand book that could be easily edited for any changes in the future and serve as a way to improve all cadets who were motivated by their cadet leadership to take action. Many times in JROTC there is a lack of capitalisation on the motivation many new cadets show by giving them the tools needed to advance. Their motivation leaves and that is when the leadership suddenly wants to teach them everything. Sometimes they get it and do well and other times they do not. Cadets could focus on other things if these initial things were handled better. At least this was my idea.

We created as many pages as possible which we then tried to fill up with useful information. We also turned each ribbon and rank in to it’s own image so we could in the future give a page to each ribbon. We made many pages and completed many of them as well before I had left. Namely the Ranks, Ribbons, Promotion Board, and Staff pages were particularly well done.

Looking back I wonder if I should have contacted other battalions in an effort to spread this work load as well. It would have been the ‘open-source’ way of doing it and probably would have resulted in some better content for everyone to link and use as well as improve. Although issues related to giving other cadets in other school an account to edit makes me uneasy it would have resulted in more work being accomplished.

And with that I give you the gallery!

So I was just at Woodsen today swimming my 2 usual individual events for a Highschool’s only invitational and I think I did pretty good! for my 200 IM I got 2:28  which is 2 seconds slower than my best time but it still felt like I gave it all I had to give that event. Then I had the 100 Breast stroke and I got another drop in time from 1:10:77 to 1:10:37 and that was literally all it took to get me in to finals in 18th/18th place later today. This with all the working out and physical activity I’ve had in the last couple days is great news to me. For the last two days I’ve had little sleep, was in charge of and participated in the cadet challenge in JROTC, then later that day I went  to Physical Therapy which was another workout, and then went to two killer practices on Friday in the morning and then again in the afternoon. Then on top of all that I didn’t drink enough water apparently since everyone I’ve talked to has told me I should have drunk more water… >_> but anyways it hurt very bad and I didn’t think I was even going to have the strength or flexibility in the IM to swim the butterfly which I think I did well in.

Finals are going to start at 4:30 and I have to sorta be there at 3-ish. I’m going to play some splinter cell and get anything I need ready and then I’ll go kick some ass in FINALS!!!

Wednesday I was at the Swimming Hall of Fame for a meet. Although I admit, we pompano, did not win every event nor did we win the meet, but we did make good strides. Well I think at least I did and my Medley B relay did really well too.

Wednesday my friend was not able to swim because he had an eye infection, and so since he normally swims the breaststroke and I only do the 200IM at the high school meets to save my other 3 possible swimming slots for all the relays, I normally don’t do the 100 breaststroke. Well since he wasn’t there they did place me in the 100m Breaststroke which I’ve been constantly been getting better at all the time. I also had the 200 Medly relay and the 400 Freestyle relay to do. That filled my max 4 events for the meet, which is a high school swimming rule that only allows 4 events per swimmer.

At the meet I felt amazing swimming the 200 IM this time. Ever since I have started going to a Physical Therapist about some back pains i have, I’ve been getting much better at swimming with the combined strengthening of some of my weakest core and upper body muscles and relaxing the muscles so they don’t strain as much with massages and some machine they have that gives electro shocks to specific areas to relax those muscles. I think with that treatment plus my training for about a week caused me to be able to drop 4 whole seconds on my IM. I also think it had to do with the fact that the last meet i swam it, was the first time I swam it in a very long time. So this time I was not only mentally prepared, but I also knew what I needed to do to not only make it though the race but how exactly to push my self to make my self go faster. It all caused me to get my best time in memory, of 2:26. I know that it’s not BLAZING fast of a speed, and I know people who are complaining about 2:13′s while then also racing against 2:00′s, but it’s my best speed so far. Since this event is so new to me, my breaststroke is strong and getting stronger, I’m getting stronger in Physical Therapy, and I have lots of time to get stronger and improve my 4 different stroke techniques in practices I think that I’ll be able to drop that time considerably before districts this year. Right now the issue is just plain endurance but also a little combination of not enough strength. Mostly endurance though because I can swim very fast but I can’t swim the speed I need long enough to get the times I want.

Later in my other individual event, the 100 Breaststroke, I also dropped time that I had not been able to drop before. I supposedly although I don’t know exactly what they were telling me that I did or how I looked but I was told that I was literally tied or in first for the first 75Yds and then in the last 25 I died and took second at 2 seconds behind. Seems like an endurance issue that I’ll have to start working on… and that’s going to be oh so much fun! Endurance training! yay! hahaha (BORAT) NOOOOOT!!!!

“>Yesterday we held a ceremony at Pompano Beach High school to honor those who died on 9-11. It was a small ceremony compared to our future Fallen Heros ceremony, but it was still very meaningful and powerful enough to get the job done. We had a ceremonial flag raising, flag folding with taps playing plus a 21 gun salute(literally 21 guns since our BB guns only shoot once at a time and we can’t use real weapons in a school), and finally the exhibition did a routine to “>honor those who died on 911. It was a little crazy with all the cadets we had that fell from locking their knees and one even had to get stitches from falling so hard on the ground while in formation.

I took lots of pictures too, a lot of them were lemons but I got some really cool shots that will be great for the end of the year E-Yearbook and also for when we work on materials to inform possible new cadets about JROTC. I also just recently created a You Tube page for JROTC so I can begin to upload videos for JROTC since bandwidth and space are not issues with you tube and they would be if I uploaded things like that to the JROTC website regularly.

I can’t wait until the Fallen Heros ceremony to get more pictures to show the work and dedication we have at the Tornado Battalion.

UPDATE: The video uploaded with the exhibition team is uploaded and processed on YouTube. Here it is…
